Preview images have begun to emerge from artist Banky‘s buzzed about Dismaland, a 2.5 acre sea front interactive art project, located in a broken down resort in a U.K. seaside city called Weston-super-Mare.
A decidedly stark take on the cheery perfect universe that is Disney, the faux park includes a broken down castle, a horse and pumpkin carriage upended by a nasty accident, plus a killer whale leaping from a toilet through a hoop.
Artists Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer and Jimmy Cauty also contributed to the show, described in press as “U.K.’s most disappointing new visitor attraction!”
All told, like much of Banky’s work, it’s a pulling back of the curtain revealing a seedier side of humanity, which in many cases feels sad, broken and utterly off kilter. Given the surround-sound nature of project, it would be interesting to see how it impacts the mood of those who spend time interacting with it versus time spent a Disneyland. Perhaps in the end it all comes out the same in the wash.
The show opens on August 21st and will run for five weeks. See more images via HuffingtonPost.
