Among those who have seen Nike’s women’s offerings for Spring 2016, the word is that the collection is stupendous in part because of the level of fabric innovation. And indeed in Nike’s second capsule with Sacai, the story is very much about fabric, specifically textiles that aren’t normally associated with activewear like wool, leather and even fur, yes fur! Nike’s first effort with Sacai while a bold step in the right direction if anything was too purely hybrid–Nike’s performance fabrics as used to express Sacai’s signature billowy looks. With capsule part deux, there is a sense that the two creative teams are literally beginning to mesh, with the beginning and end of one label’s ideas hard to discern from the other, a sort of dynamic among collaborative partners that feels like nothing short of a match made in heaven. For us, the outside observer, the results feels fresh and exciting and fun. Like okay, fashion design isn’t dead after all! And strictly from a war friendly competition between the sexes point of view, for once it feels like women are getting something from Nike the guys are going to be jealous of. Yes!
Part one of the capsule launches today with the available pieces now on the U.S. site for Nike.com. It looks like the heavier wool and fur pieces won’t come available until the second drop in December.
