If you’re up on the style blogger scene, you know there is a whole subset of hijab fashionistas, many of whom have massive followings. [Side note: hijab can further refer to any head, face, or body covering worn by Muslim women that conforms to a certain standard of modesty; the abaya is the gown.] Dolce & Gabbanna very smartly has spied the trend and has launched a hijab and abaya collection for spring 2016 that speaks to the specific style needs of Muslim women who wear hijab.
In recent years some designers have offered small capsule collections specific to hijab wearers and last year Net-A-Porter published an editorial called “The Ramadan Edit,” in honor of the month long Muslim holiday. As well, H&M featured hijab-wearing Mariah Idrissi in a campaign last fall. With a major luxury brand like Dolce jumping into the ring, it’s likely that we’ll see more luxury brands and fast fashion retailers with a global presence follow.
