If you are a woman of color and a lip gloss aficionado, you know that for a long while, MAC Lipglass glosses were pretty much your only option. While not as splashy, Nars Cosmetics, in the late ’90s and early ’00s quietly began to make itself known as an option for black woman on the hunt for fresh lip color options. Known for its sleek packaging, provocative product names and artful campaigns, Nars launches collections each season that highlight not just a trend but a mood and feeling.
Titled “Powerfall,” Nars campaign for fall 2016 is anchored on concepts of strength, independence and authenticity with model Aya Jones styled to reflect the tough glamour and sensuality of blaxploitation stars like Pam Grier.
Photographed by the label’s founder François Nars, the campaign has been on the receiving end of heaps of praise from black media outlets, though sadly, has received very little coverage with mainstream beauty outlets. Definitely the beauty of these images isn’t lost on us.
