New York rapper Princess Nokia took a big step today, making her widely-popular 1992 album available for the first time on all streaming services. Now signed to Rough Trade, Nokia’s 16-track album has been remixed and has an additional eight tracks, including remastered versions of her popular efforts including “Bart Simpson,” “Tomboy” and “Kitana.”
At the same time, Nokia also dropped a visual for the Kadi Haze-produced single “Flava.” Directed by Nokia aka Destiny Frasqueri and long-time collaborator Milah Libin, the visual features trans model Maya Monès and is a celebration of of the beauty of women of color.
Explained Nokia, “I wanted to make a cinematic short film that accurately depicted a portrayal of urban sisterhood through a personal and accurate lens, with a narration that foreshadows the intersectionality of self esteem, self love and cultural appropriation of urban beauty in mainstream media. .”
There will also will be a first-time vinyl version of 1992 offered in blue or yellow wax and packaged in a nylon drawstring backpack, now available for pre-order on roughtrade.com.
