Los Angeles-based No Sesso as its name states (Italian for “no gender”) has its roots in the idea of creating clothing with no specific gender label. The fall 2017 collection mixes patchwork denim offerings with colorful knits and fur accessories made in part through collaborative efforts. For knits, Davis worked with British artist Elvira Graham, while graphics were created with painter Janiva Ellis.
In an interview with Office magazine, label designer Pierre Davis, who founded the label in 2015, further expanded on his inspiration for the line. “While I sewed the last few months, there was always Star Trek playing in the background and I was inspired by their costumes, the textures of the clothing and skin,” said Davis. “A lot of TV shows and movies that take place in the future don’t have black people in them so I wanted to explore it through my own vision. It’s a conceptual representation of how I see my future. The bright colors were integrated to contrast the gray winter months and help people with seasonal depression. You can put on something colorful and change your mood for the day. We wanted to exhibit happiness and show people smiling which is something you don’t typically see in fashion campaigns.”
