British singer/songerwriter Jorja Smith checked in this week with Montreal retailer Ssense.com on an array of topics including the prying eyes that come with fame, which has grown dramatically for the 21-year old since she dropped her first single, “Blue Lights” in January 2016.
Smith saw her profile take an especially big jump when she was featured on Drake’s 2017 More Life album, an inclusion that came with rumors the two were dating. At the same time, most have concluded that “Jaded” from Drake’s Scorpian album is about Drake’s relationship with Smith.
On the topic of the 6 God, Smith was asked about rumors Drake’s No. 11 tattoo paid homage to her June 11th birthday and 2016 “Project 11″ EP.
Interestingly, Smith side stepped addressing the No. 11 tattoo and instead spoke to one of Drake’s tattoos of a woman’s face.”No, that’s definitely not true. If he has, I haven’t seen it. I’m sure if he had a tattoo of me it would be on the internet somewhere. Look it’s Sade, although it could be me right now with this net around my hair,” said Smith.
Smith also acknowledged she’s been dating singer and music producer Joel Compass for about a year. When Smith tagged him on Instagram a couple months back it caused a major uproar especially among her crushing male fans. “We wrote ‘The One’ from my album. I posted a picture of him with the lyrics and everyone was like ‘Fuck him!’ I probably shouldn’t have tagged him in it, I’m never posting a picture of him again,” she lamented.
As to all of the above, Smith is dismayed not just by the loss of privacy, but also the mean comments that come with it. She explained, “Everyone wants to know what you’re doing. Everyone already knows what you’re doing. Everyone has an opinion on what you’re doing.”
“Did you see the photo I posted in the red dress and everyone commented that I look pregnant?,” she said, adding, “I get it, I don’t have the flattest tummy. What I don’t understand is why people would choose to spend three minutes of their day making someone else feel like shit. I try not to pay too much attention to it because you can get really sad and it’s not real, none of it is real.”
