Los Angeles-based stylist Aleali May checked in with Barney’s who interviewed and shot her for an editorial featuring items from the fall 2017 season.
Starting with her work habits, May described herself as an early bird, rising at 5:45 AM to “answer emails, making sure all of my shoot pulls are going through before European offices close around 9:00 AM.”
Describing her signature, street-inspired look, May said, “My uniform consists of loose pants, a cool belt, a tank top or bodysuit, and sneakers or boots. If it’s cold, I’ll wear a jacket too. I have a small frame, so something with some structure, the bigger, the better.”
May added, “My personal style is a mix between high fashion and street. Since I am from South Central, I have that part of my history, but I am also a girl with dreams, so I love Chanel.
May spends a lot of time in her home city Los Angeles and New York (where she shot the editorial) and provided Barneys with her view on the differences between Los Angeles and New York style.
While in Los Angeles, May explained, “I go with sneakers and my casual, cool vibe, but when I’m in New York, I always like to wear more daring, conceptual pieces, such as my Margiela Tabi boots, because New Yorkers get it. In Los Angeles people would be like ‘What are those?’ But New York people understand and respect them.”
