Campaign images Lady Gaga for Versace campaign flashed across social media outlets today (as shot by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott), proving that while Gaga’s star might not be as white hot as it once was, given the right project she can still cause a stir. And certainly this is a pairing that somehow makes sense for both. Gaga and Donatella Versace are longtime industry friends, and one could see how the two connect. Both are over-the-top and fearless in the ways they express their love for fashion, beauty and art, and as a result, aesthetically they could even pass as family members. Donatella herself recently said, “She is like family to me, the embodiment of the Versace DNA.”
The ’90s fashion revival has been good to Versace, as of late you can practically feel the more favorably winds behind it, a change of events one could say was foreshadowed by the popularity of the Migos x Drake song honoring the Italian label and its famous “Medusa head.” And then, too, Donatella deserves her props for long being a loyal and undaunted usher for her brother’s genius vision. Thus, who knows, perhaps this association will be just the salve Gaga needs to ignite her own comeback. It was the fashion community that first grew tired of her, perhaps they will be the first to usher her back into the fold.
