Maison Martin Margiela has included in Autumn offerings a collection of items like the clutch above whose surfaces are embellished with square-shaped pieces of compact disc chips. In addition to the chip’s iridescent, disco-ball appearance, which references on an ongoing theme for the label, their use also speaks to Margiela’s interest in mining the past to comment on the present. In this case the chips reflect the rapid rise and fall of technology through use of an item that in the very recent past seemed like it would have true staying power.
