A trailer for What Happened, Miss Simone, a documentary covering the life of singer Nina Simone has been released by Netflix. Directed by Liz Garbus, the film was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014. While biographical movies often receive push back from family members (as is now the case with the Amy Winehouse film set for a July launch), in the case of this film, it’s executive produced by Simone’s only child, Lisa Simone Kelly, who is shown as a narrator in the trailer.
A controversial Nina Simone biopic titled Nina, starring Zoe Saldana was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2014, but its wider launch has been held up because of legal disputes among producers. Simone Kelly was opposed to the film and among multiple issues, critical of the choice to have Saldana portray her mother. What Happened Miss Simone will be available through Netflix starting July 26th.
