Much has been made of Adidas Original’s collaboration with Kanye West, but meanwhile in the background, Three Stripes’ iconic Stan Smith and Superstar have been doing so well at retail that they are sold out in a bunch of sizes and pretty much gone in anything under a men’s size eight. In fact we defy you to find a pair of Superstar kicks in white leather with black stripes anywhere in a size eight or below (basically any of the men’s sizes that tend to be popular with women too).
While part of their success is simply tailwinds from the ’90s redux trend and the return to white leather, a lot of work was put in by Adidas to make sure it would be not just in the mix but a major benefactor of the look. Over the past two years it has kicked into gear global marketing campaigns pushing and hyping both shoe models that included multiple collaborations with designers and musicians.
If anything, given the Stan Smith is the current fashionista shoe of choice in New York and Paris (ask Isabel Marant about that), frankly, it’s a little surprising that the Superstar appears to be the shoe in shorter demand, but there ya go. Have no fear though, they are not gone forever, but restocks probably won’t come until at least July.
