There have been signs pointing to new designer Alessandro Michele having the chops to bring the House of Gucci back to place of prominence and influence, a place it really hasn’t occupied since Tom Ford left in 2004, and with the pre-fall 2016 collection it’s clear the deal has been sealed. Michele’s first collection was full of great pieces albeit a tad too eclectic. With fall, he sharpens his focus and creates a much more cohesive collection that hones in on a woman whose appeal is a bit more complicated and less clear cut, and yet, is a very confident woman, one who dresses as much to entertain her quirky soul as anyone else.
The shoot itself recalls a time pre-social media, when all we had to record the big moments in our lives were cameras, whose resultant images were often off kilter and less than exact. After years of obsession with perfection driven by the instantaneous nature of digital images, coupled with blaring about uniformity and branding, the looks reflect a certain relaxed outlook that is a welcome relief and makes sense for now. Never would there be a Tom Ford 2.o, but a Gucci Part Two as lead by Michele has a nice ring to it.
