Fashion right now is having a moment with the androgynous and sport-informed, lux street look (or however you want to describe it) as repped by labels including Vetements, Off White, Acne, among others.
It’s pretty clear that more than anyone, fashion blogger Aleali May is not just owning the look, but pushing it forward with a fashion sense that smoothly blends artful and edgy pieces with shrug room, all of which are built off a Yeezy-informed palette of faded army greens, tans, grays and blues with white being the brightest color you’ll see her in. This is the catch though, while the outfits she sports have a casual feel, a lot of them also have big personalities and only work because she has the personality to wear and not be worn.
Reflecting the unisex edge of the trend, body-con is not in her vocabulary and yet, May will do the occasional toast to Aaliyah (with whom she shares more than a passing resemblance) often with mid-drift baring bandeau tops set off by baggy trousers.
Brands she’s frequently spotted in included the ones listed above though she’s also a big supporter of lesser known yet eminently cool labels like Hyein Seo, Sandra Kpodonou, Ready Made, Samuel Ross, Maharishi and The Line by K.
Raised on Jordan kicks, May still loves sneakers, mostly splitting her affection between Nike and Adidas, both of which keep her laced in their most coveted launches. Though sneakers are her most go-to shoe silhouette, she has no problem rocking a pair of heels and keeps boots by Off White, Vetements and Yeezy Season 3 in high rotation.
May’s fashion credentials are deeply rooted and top notch and more than just a wide-eyed, Jenny-come-lately Supreme fan girl, she also put in work at best-in-class retailers Louis Vuitton and Just Don’s RSVP Gallery while studying marketing and fashion merchandising at Columbia College in Chicago, and when she moved back to Los Angeles, the highly-regarded FourTwoFour label and boutique.
Her look feels authentic because she is literally a part of the South Central Los Angeles fabric that has had a massive influence on many of the labels she favors. Claiming a background of black American, Argentinian and Filipino, in recent coverage by Complex magazine, May broke down her style DNA, saying, “My mom dressed like Sade. She had the red lip, the ponytail, over-sized button downs, you know? My dad was super L.A., so Chucks, Dickies, all of that. I think having them around, it helped my creativity,” said May.
Looking at May’s style, you see a best-of-hybrid of both parents, the effortlessly seductive swag of Sade combined with the street tough chino, button up and bandanna look ’90s South Central is renowned for.
To keep up with May, follow her on Instagram, her own site and Snapchat, all under her own name, @alealimay. In the meantime, we’ve combed through her Instagram and picked what we think are a dozen or so of her best looks from the past year.
