As part of Ikea’s 9th PS collection, the furniture company is planning to offer a chair inspired by the 3-D knitting used in athletic footwear. Not unlike a sneaker, the chair is composed of mesh that is stretched across a steel frame.
Designed by in-house Ikea designer Sarah Fager, the chair was made using a digital knitting similar to tone made to produce Nike‘s Flyknit, which was first sold in 2012.
“At Ikea we have been curious about this 3D knitting technique for some time. We have all seen it being used in those colorful sneakers and it’s a really smart way to produce things, since it’s fully automatized and this knitting machine can be placed at any supplier to combine it with other materials in a product,” said Fager on the chair. Priced at $160.00 and offered in pink and blue, this item will hit stores in February 2017.
Ikea offers its PS collections every three years and for 2017, the line will include over 50 products including limited edition items designed by 17 designers from around the world
