A longtime friend of Courtney Love, designer Marc Jacobs has also known her daughter, Frances Cobain, since she was a toddler. Though neither a model nor interested in becoming one, Cobain was willing to front the campaign based on the collection, which she loved, and their long relationship.
“I don’t think I’ll be modeling for anybody else for a very long time. This is 100 percent outside my comfort zone. I wouldn’t have done it with anyone other than Marc,” she said in an interview with Vogue, noting she been asked previously to appear in campaigns and had turned down all offers prior to Jacobs.
“In a post introducing the campaign, Jacobs wrote, “I first met Frances Bean when she was 2 years old at a dinner with her mom (Courtney) and Anna Sui in 1994 at Bar Six in NYC. I have always wanted to work with Frances. Her beauty, uniqueness, and strength is something I have long admired and respected. Few things remain as constant as my continued inspiration from those whose honesty, integrity, courage, and curiosity lead them to explore and venture beyond preconceived boundaries.
As it happens, the dress Cobain is wearing in the first image is not unlike a very sparkly version of the babydoll party dresses her mother was famous for wearing as a member of Hole.
As photographed in black and white by David Sims, Cobain as the face of the spring campaign marks the first time in four years a single face has represented the label.
