There are those humans who claim to see no colors as a way to prove they’re not racist. It’s not only a misinformed perspective, but sort of sad because people’s many different hues are one of the best aspects of human beings.
Keeping the beautiful mosaic theme in mind, we rounded up the dopest new offerings from brands known for their inclusivity, probably not coincidentally, they’re all indies. Similar to our luxury label round up, we the best of what just dropped or what is soon to launch. Check them all out below.
Alima Pure: Mineral makeup brand Alima Pure is a favorite among celebrities for its modern and minimalist ingredients and packaging, but the Portland-based brand is also one of the most environmentally sustainable brands out there today. Over the past year it’s focused primarily on expanding the shade ranges of their cosmetic products, but it just expanded its brand with two primers: a smoothing facial primer, and an eye primer as well. It may not be edgiest item out there, but the quality of both products earns them makeup bag staple status. Visit alimapure.com for more info.
Dose of Colors: There was a lot of excitement in the lead up to Dose of Colors’ Baked Browns and Marvelous Mauves eyeshadow palettes on March 15, 2017, and both have lived up to the hype, receiving rave reviews from longtime fans plus winning new converts. Considering how on-trend mauve is right now (see the Lime Crime hair dye review below) it’s no shocker that its palette is one you’re going to be seeing all over Instagram for the next couple of months. And while the lead up to the launch of the palettes was lengthy, the brand happily shocked everyone this past weekend when, sans warning, it released a new Supreme Glow highlighter in three new shades at IMATS NY. Unfortunately, only one shade of the line, Gold is the New Black, is available on Dose of Colors’ website, but we expect the other shades, Milk N’ Honey, Dream On, and Royal Hotness, plus two additional shades will be released online later this month. Visit doseofcolor.com for more info.
Milk Makeup: Production and media company Milk Group continues to build and grow on a foundation built on incubating cutting edge fashion and beauty movements. Much to our delight, last year in February 2016, it launched Milk Makeup, up line informed by its very cool and inclusive DNA. For its spring lineup, Milk ups the ante on its top-selling makeup and skincare sticks with the release of the Mars stick (launching May, 2, 2017), a pinkish highlighter with gold flecks that provides a more toned down version of its insanely popular Holographic stick. Other spring highlights include the Liquid Strobe highlighter pen composed of actual crushed pearls, Eye Vinyl glossy shadow, plus for good measure, the cutest little star tattoo stamp ever. If you’re looking for a cool-girl makeup brand, Milk’s ever-expanding line is your best bet. Visit milkmakeup.com for more info.
Huda Beauty: Although she had us all convinced on April Fools’ Day with her Fender finger blender prank, Huda Kattan’s upcoming additions to her Huda Beauty line are very real. Within the past two months she’s added seven shades to her Matte Liquid Lipstick line: a grey called Silver Fox (after her husband), her first two metallic releases ever, and four nudes inspired by love, aptly named the Nude Love collection. But the product we’ve been sitting on our hands waiting for is yet to come. Soon, she’ll be releasing 3D highlighter palettes: Pink Sands, for fair to medium skin tones and Gold Sands for medium to deep skin tones. Huda has also let it be known that later this year we can expect a super-inclusive range of foundations. Visit shophudabeauty.com for more info.
Juvia’s Place: Known and appreciated for its distinctive packaging paying homage to African female royalty, Juvia Place probably has produced more innovative eyeshadow palettes in the past year than many better known and financed brands have. Earlier this year, it rolled out the beautifully-colored Saharan pallet, offering shades inspired by the Gerewol festival, a traditional courtship ceremony held by the Falani people of West Africa (look it up on YouTube, it’s amazing). The brand will makes its first foray into facial cosmetics with the Saharan Blush palette, which will be rolled out in two parts. No dates on the release but the brand has provided image of the packaging. Visit juviasplace.com for more info.
Lime Crime: Since the release of its much-Instagrammed Hi-Lite Opals palette, LimeCrime has continued to quietly expand and grow offerings. We especially are into its new Diamond Crushers glitter liquid lipstick colors, bundled in a three-pack called Black Unicorn. The brand is also making waves with its three-years-in-the-making, semi-permanent Unicorn Hair dyes, with the color Sext gaining the most notoriety both for its name and its gorgeous mauve tone. The new, incredibly vibrant dyes come in a wide range of shades, though you might want to consider having a professional handle the process because they require that you pre-bleach your hair. Visit limecrime.com for more info.
Pat McGrath: Long known behind the scenes for her legendary skills, makeup artist Pat McGrath has skyrocketed to mainstream fame since launching a namesake beauty line in October 2015. Super limited and top quality, everything she puts out instantly lands on every makeup fiend’s wishlist. McGrath linked with none other than Kim Kardashian to debut her latest product launch, called Dark Star 006, a kit with four pigments, an eye gloss, a black SmudgeLiner, and a blender brush. In other words, everything you need to ensure the perfect glossy, smoky eye. Priced at $130, Dark Star 006 launched on April 11, 2017, on patmcgrath.com and is already sold out, but you will have a second chance to scoop this opulent product on Sephora on April 22nd.
Revel by JL: Launched in 2013 by celebrity stylist Julian Lark, in all ways Revel by JL walks the walk when it comes to building a brand that not only embraces but is inspired by inclusivity. For spring, Revel’s new Passport Collection includes an amazing array of lip glosses, and fans of the product are very much into additional colors made in collaboration with singer/songwriters Bahja Rodriguez (Naked in Milan, a rosy nude and Atlanta Thunder, a hot pink) and Xiamara Jennings (Shanghai, a dark nude). In collaboration with r&b singer Dondria Nicole, it recently released Phattitude, a collection that includes three matte liquid lipsticks, two metallic stains, two lipsticks, two highlighters, a hydrating foundation primer and a mascara with keratin, which is already out of stock. The brand’s range is crazy, and if you want to get creative with lip colors, this is your best bet. Visit revelbyjl.com for more info.
