Los Angeles-based Grayscale designed by Texas native Khala Jones is creating a lot of buzz with its Under Bust Corset skirt. Made of non stretch latex, the skirt keeps in step with the current hourglass body hugging silhouettes that have been favored by women all over the country for a few seasons now.
Sported by the likes of recording artist Fantasia, Cardi B and Keke Palmer to name a few, the young label launched less than a year ago in December 2016, and is a part of a cool crop of new, female-owned independent labels like Matte and K Label creating unique pieces sold directly to the consumer and marketed through social media.
In a phone conversation with Snobette, Jones said, “The idea from the line really came from the desire to create the of clothes I want to wear. For example, the corset skirt was not a huge success with my peers when I first designed it. After a few tweaks the final product was versatile to more body types and that’s what I wanted.”
Entirely self taught Jones has sold over a thousand corset skirts and is still a one-woman enterprise with an assist provided by an intern. “Stylists started pulling pieces and the skirt phenomenon snowballed, having me constantly trying to catch up,” said Jones. “But while I had to expand my production, I also want to keep the prices down. I have no desire in creating an $800 shirt. Balling on a budget is what I believe in, so my pricing will always reflect that.”
