Cardi B performed on “Saturday Night Live” last night and chose the platform to confirm her pregnancy.
Cardi opened the show performing a “Bodak Yellow”/”Cartier Bardi” medley at which point it appeared she was going to keep the pregnancy under wraps…literally, with the Bronx rapper wearing a high-coverage black and white feather dress by Christian Cowan (who she also wore for her album cover).
She made the big reveal during her second performance of “Be Careful,” wearing a custom white dress designed by Christian Siriano. With the lights down for the first third of the song, the audience cheered when the camera pulled back and the lights came up, revealing a clearly pregnant Cardi.
Following the show, Cardi wrote on Twitter, “I started winning when the whole world was doubting on me !think imma lose with my little baby counting on me ?”
Cardi’s stylist Kollin Carter also weighed in on Instagram, writing, “Congrats my love! We are free! Lol We don’t have to hide anymore! No more tutus and ruffles.”
Side note: We wrote about Cardi B’s pregnancy here when it was first reported on by TMZ. We’re looking forward to seeing Cardi continue to blaze trails as a female entertainer in the rap business. Unlike their male counterparts, women in entertainment consistently have been told having children is a career killer.
At 25, Cardi is young, healthy and will probably recover quickly from birth. As well, she has the support of her family, fiancé and can afford to pay an around-the-clock support staff. There’s no reason having a baby should impact her career in entertainment any more than Offset, the man who fathered her child.
Watch both of her performances below along with a skit in which Aidy Bryant gets carried away by Cardi-fueled feminist empowerment.
