Philly rapper Tierra Whack is having a break out moment driven by the strength of Whack World, a 15:47-minute visual she dropped today (May 30, 2018). In the beautifully visual, Whack casually flows from singing to rapping, delivering wit-filled and nuanced rhymes with ease.
Directed by Thibaut Duverneix and Mathieu Léger, the artful video opens in a nail salon where Whack is getting her nails done. When she pulls back her hoodie, she reveals a face that’s badly swollen on the right side. Multiple scene switches follow, going from a cheery scene showing Whack grooming a stuffed dog to her sitting in a darkened room bummed about a broken TV and ending up in a room full of mirrors.
The video is a visual realization of her Whack World album, comprised of 15 songs, each one minute long.
While 2018 appears to be Whack’s year, she didn’t come out of nowhere. Commenting on her come up, Whack wrote on Instagram, “There’s been so many times I wanted to give up, but thank god i didn’t!! Giving up is way too easy! I’m closer than I ever been! So to anybody who’s thinking about giving up, DONT. I’ve been rapping for 9+ YEARS and I’m finally getting a little recognition!(which means A LOT) I’m on break at work right now just thinking about how far I’ve come… work hard and stay humble!”
Whack currently is included among XXL‘s magazine’s 10th spot nominees. She will perform at the Roots Picnic on June 2, 2018 in Philadelphia.
