If you’ve been paying attention, you may have noticed the previews for “Insecure” season three have not included character Lawrence Walker (Jay Ellis). There’s lots of Issa Dee (Issa Rae) and Daniel (Y’lan Noel) but her ex is nowhere to be found.
At “Insecure Fest,” a season three kick-off event on July 21, 2018, in Los Angeles, Rae and her show runner, Prentice Penny, gave some insight into why, explaining this season is about Issa moving on from her relationship with Lawrence.
“[Issa and Lawrence] had a great conversation at the end of season two and it was just about like, hey, she’s moving on Daniel, sometimes we have those conversations,” Rae told Vulture at the event. “You never see the exes again. And it’s okay! You gotta explore life without Lawrence.”
Penny added, “At the end of the day, we’re always trying to tell stories that are true and authentic. We were in the writers room and we were initially talking about, ‘Okay, well what is he doing? Well, he’s not in her life right now.’ It was hard to make stories around that. We just said, well, if he’s not around, he’s not around. Let’s just deal with the reality of what her life is now. Let’s be true to that, when you breakup and you have closure.”
Penny also implied Rae will do more than just date Daniel. “It was also like, well where is Issa in her life right now? What would challenge that? And you’ll see lots of people who are her love interest kind of come in and out,” Penny explained.
When last we saw Issa and Lawrence, it was in the finale of season two (watch at 03:51 below) in a scene that did seem to shut the door on their relationship.
Season three of Insecure kicks off on August 12, 2018 on HBO.
