Nike has rolled out official press for its collaborative boot with author Tom Sachs, a boot called Mars Yard Overshoe. The boot is very much a looker, but at the same time it makes use of materials that make it a functioning outdoor shoe. According to Nike press: “The duality serves well for the annoyances of a New York March, and allows chic navigation of street, subway and fashion week. A new tread pattern, created by a small sipping at the high points of the outsole, is designed from a mastery of New York’s winters too.”
Sachs, under the moniker NikeCraft, first began working with Nike on collaborative projects in 2012. According to Sachs, NikeCraft is “a combination of things only Nike can produce and things only Sachs can produce. It is fifty-fifty. It is an aesthetic of transparency.”
The boot was officially revealed at the debut of Sach’s Paradox Bullets film at the Frieze art fair in London on October 6, 2018. The boot is featured in the film, which was written and directed by longtime Sachs collaborator Van Neistat and stars 80-year old artist Ed Ruscha. The action takes place in the Mojave Desert where Ruscha is attempting to track down a lost pair of keys.
The Nike x Tom Sachs Mars Yard Overshoe will drop at Dover Street Market London on October 11, 2018. The shoe will be available in-store only via online raffle. The limited release will be followed by a global release date sometime in the coming months.
