Founded in 1965, enduring Italian label United Colors of Benneton had a break out moment with the presentation of its first runway, shown on the first day (February 21, 2019) of Milan Fashion Week. Designed by JC de Castelbajac, the colorful collection was appropriately titled “Rainbow Machine.”
Brought on fall 2018, Castelbajac explained in press that “Rainbow” references label founder Luciano Benetton’s love of color. He added, “Luciano and I are all about color, while ‘machine’ is a tribute to Benetton’s great industrial tradition, its know how and its one-of-a kind technological expertise.”
In addition to Castelbajac joining the label, Benetton returned as chairman of the group in January 2019. Benneton had retired in 2012, but chose to return to the brand in an effort to reinvigorate flagging sales.
