New York-based Glossier launched a new Instagram feed on February 22, 2019 to tease a new line called Play. Fans of the brand tried mightily to guess what the new line might be (sex toys? active apparel) but Glossier stayed mum. The minimalist beauty brand finally made the big reveal on Tuesday and it turns out Play is not a new category, but rather what the brand describes as “dialed up beauty extras that make getting the best part about going out.”
The first Play product launch includes eight items: Vinylic Lip, Colorslide eye pencil, Glitter Gelée eye shadow, Niteshine highlighter, The Detailer application tool and Blade, a pencil sharpener.
While plenty of people on Glossier Play’s Instagram feed were very excited by the new products, there were as many if not more who shared the sentiment of someone who wrote, “Is this a joke? Everything is very underwhelming. A pencil sharpener??? Glitter pot and brush. Wow. Florals for spring. Groundbreaking.” Another commenter added, “Well. That was underwhelming. Weeks of hype for a bloody pencil sharpener and some glitter.”
