Queens-rapper Nicki Minaj had something to say today (June 27, 2019) about the 2019 BET Awards today and it wasn’t about any of the performances. Minaj who didn’t attend the show was happy to point out that BET’s ratings for the show hit an all-time low with just two million viewers, according to Twitter account @musicnewsfacts. (According to TV by the Numbers, BET Awards won the evening’s No. 1 spot on cable TV with 2.43 million viewers)
On Twitter, Minaj wrote, “When u go out of ur way to b spiteful & hurt artists who have always supported ur show… when you fire great ppl who have put their heart & soul into the show… when you’d rather be a messy reality show than a prestigious award show… when ur still being dragged by that lace.”
While nominated for best female rapper, Minaj chose not to attend the award show because of a February 2019 BET tweet that simultaneously celebrated Cardi B for winning a Grammy while also dragging Minaj.
In a since-deleted tweet linking to the Grammy story, BET wrote, “Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj is being dragged by her lacefront.” Minaj clapped back with a quickness and let it be known she was dropping out of a planned BET concert.
BET did its best to walk back the tweet with a lengthy statement praising Minaj that included an apology but the damage was done, and by the sounds of things four months after the fact, the relationship is still splintered.
