The Grand Slam tournament circuit will draw to a close with the U.S. Open tournament in Queens where Naomi Osaka will defend her 2018 title. Marking the occasion, she will wear a NikeCourt apparel designed by Sacai, a Japanese label led by Chitose Abe.
While Abe has collaborated with Nike on multiple occasions (and has a shoe and clothing capsule dropping on September 12, 2019), this is the first time she’s worked with Nike on a pure performance garment. It’s a pairing that’s fitting for Osaka, who was born in Japan to a Haitian father and a Japanese mother.
According to press describing Osaka’s outfit, “The doubled skirt adds depth and dimension to a tennis standard. More covert: The ensemble is formed with an eye to bridging tennis’ athletic present with its past traditions. From a distance, the two-piece outfit appears to be a dress; at closer glance, one sees an elegant articulation of a contemporary bodysuit.”
