New York-based Opening Ceremony announced today (January 14, 2019) it will shutter all four of its retail locations sometime in 2020. The announcement follows yesterday’s news that owners Humberto Leon and Carol Lim had sold intellectual property rights to the Opening Ceremony name to Farfetch‘s New Guards Group.
Today’s store closing announcement is in contrast to yesterday’s reporting on the transaction, which stated the founders would continue to run Opening Ceremony’s four stores located in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo.
The news was announced on Instagram with a statement addressed to the “Opening Ceremony family” reading, “This is why it’s incredibly emotional for us to announce today that we will be closing our Opening Ceremony retail locations sometime in 2020. We’ve made a decision to focus on growing Opening Ceremony collection and brand with our new partners, New Guards Group, and expand the designs of Opening Ceremony.”
Reflecting on a changing retail environment, the statement noted, “We know our decision may surprise you and it may be interpreted in many different ways. Ultimately, in this time of immense change in the way that people shop, we still believe in the power of passionate and unique retail. But we also believe in the necessity for change, reflection and an opportunity to refresh.”
