It’s an emotional day for the Barbz with news that Doja Cat‘s “Say So” single featuring Nicki Minaj today (May 11, 2020) landed the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. The single marks the first time both Doja (real name Amalaratna Dlamini) and Minaj (real name Onika Miraj) have achieved a No. 1 single and it’s also the first time a female rap duo have gone No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart.
According to Billboard, Minaj’s chart topper breaks the record for the longest length of time between entry on the Hot 100 and a No. 1 single with “Say So” marking her 109th time charting.
Commenting on the big moment, Minaj wrote on Twitter, “Can’t thank you guys enough for going so hard this past week to help us make history. I saw it all. 🥺 You’ll never understand how much you uplift me with the overwhelming love & support you continue to show. I love you so much. Like so much. So much. 🎈Dear @dojacat, thanks for trusting me with your baby. Hope I lived up to your expectations. You’re so extremely talented & so deserving of this moment. 🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀 what time r u showing ur boobs? Love, Nic .”
First released in November 2019 as part of Doja’s Hot Pink album, the single was sent to U.S. radio in January 2020. Written by Doja Cat, Lydia Asrat, Yeti Beats and Lukasz Gottwald, the song picked up momentum when a dance move created by Haley Sharpe went viral on TikTok. The remix of the single featuring Minaj was dropped on May 1st.
“Say So” was battling it out with Megan thee Stallion‘s “Savage,” featuring Beyoncé, which took Hot 100’s No. 2 spot, rising from the No. 4 place the prior week.
