While May was another very heavy one (RIP George Flyod), musically it was a significant one for women who for better or worse grabbed the headlines all month. Significantly, Nicki Minaj landed her first Billboard Hot 100 single as a featured song on Doja Cat‘s “Say So” single. Two weeks later, Megan thee Stallion also attained her first No. 1 with “Savage” featuring fellow Houstonite Beyoncé.
Sadly, it was also a month in which Doja was exposed for exhibiting less-than-savory behavior in a chat room known to attract bigots. Not long after, Lana del Rey stirred the pot when she kvetched in multiple Instagram posts about being critiqued unfairly by music industry critics over her brand of feminism in comparison to a list comprised almost entirely of black female musicians.
Snobette Sounds best new singles in May include music by or featuring women include Teyana Taylor, Kehlani, Tierra Whack, Megan thee Stallion, Chloe x Halle, TeaMarrr, Mariah the Scientist, JoJo, Dounia, Justine Skye, Kaash Paige, Jade Novah, Inayah, RIMON and Lyrica Anderson.
