Model and music creative Selah Marley has accused Rihanna‘s team of thieving a set decoration idea from her for the brand’s fall 2020 Savage X Fenty Volume 2 presentation, an event sponsored by and exclusively aired by Amazon Prime on October 2, 2020.
Claiming several people reached out to her unprompted to point out similarities, Marley said she was inspired to speak out about the likenesses between the Savage X Fenty show and her plant-filled “Primordial Place” performance, a fauna-filled installation that included a dance performance staged in Brooklyn in May 2019.
In an Instagram post, Marley explained, “Quite a few friends brought this up to me & I wasn’t gonna say anything about this, but I’m bothered. For those who remember, I did ‘A Primordial Place’ in May 2019.. I put my heart & soul (& all the money I had) into this project and…. I don’t know. Is it just me?
“As a young, independent, female black artist, I genuinely feel robbed. I’m not signed to any label.. I don’t have any investors. I just have myself & the people who support me. It took A LOT to pull this together & to see it replicated almost exactly with no mention of my name or the work I previously put in is just ridiculous.”
While there are some supporting her, as you can imagine she’s mainly being dragged to hell and back by the Navy.
Throughout the comments many have pointed out while the recent Savage X Fenty performance did include a dance segment with a plant-filled backdrop, more so it appeared to be a throwback to the brand’s debut presentation in fall 2018, held as part of New York Fashion Week.
Th 21-year-old Marley has not shied away from taking on titans this year. Prior to accusing Rihanna of design theft, she called out her mother and father, Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley, for their failings as parents, going to so far as to describe Hill as an amazing woman who was often angry and at times physically abusive.
