London-based menswear label Wales Bonner as lead by Grace Wales Bonner rolls out a debut effort with Adidas, a smooth capsule celebrating ’70s-era London style as viewed through a Caribbean lens. The collection was first shown as part of the label’s January presentation held during London Fashion Week Men’s.
According to press describing the capsule, “Grace Wales Bonner retells the story of London’s 1970s subcultures, putting the capital’s Caribbean youth front and center. The result is a collection of pieces each with its own unique textures, designs, and detailing.”
Bonner states, “It was amazing to get into the archive with Adidas, and really study how it has been interpreted by different cultures across times. I was interested in elevating the familiar, and bringing an eveningwear and tailored sensibility to this essential collection.”
The winner of the 2016 LVMH Prize and a graduate of Central Saint Martins, Bonner tapped into her own Jamaican heritage to design a collection of elevated sportswear classics like a Lovers Rock track jacket, striped turtleneck, long-sleeve soccer jersey, logo t-shirt with satin sleeves and Rock tailored trousers.
There are two sneaker silhouettes, Samba and SL72, both of which makes used of antiqued leather, mesh and corduroy to create a modern story with a retro edge.
Priced from $110 for a logo t-shirt up to $320 for a button down, Adidas and Grace Wales Bonner’s capsule is live on walesbonner.net as well as adidas.com and select retailers.
