Enduring comfort brand Birkenstock has linked up with British label Toogood on a capsule featuring three new footwear styles called the Forager, the Mudlark and the Beachcomber. According to designer Faye Toogood, the collection takes inspiration from objets trouvés, which translates to found objects.
Alongside the Birkenstock shoes, Toogood also designed a complementary selection of men’s and women’s clothing and accessories for each silhouette, making use of a muted color palette.
For the pièce de résistance, the London-based company designed a bed whose puffy layers of canvas and leather upholstery sit on a cork base just like a pair of Birkenstock sandals.
Reflecting on making adjustments to the brand’s famed silhouettes, Toogood told Vogue, “You have to be careful if you’re talking about recutting them. That’s like redoing the shape of a wheel. You have to keep that fine line. We wanted to make something different, but something you could still connect to the original, practical, shape.”
Founded in 2008, Toogood is known for its beautifully crafted furniture, homeware and fashion. The label’s furniture is handmade and described as taking “a distinctly sculptural approach to the art of furniture design.” Clothing is rooted in workwear whether that of a metal worker or stone mason. The result is equal parts traditional and futuristic not unlike the clothing worn by the Jedi.
Priced from $380-$510, all three Birkenstock and Toogood silhouettes are available on matchesfashion.com and birkenstock.com. The entire collection including the bed, can be purchased on t-o-o-g-o-o-d.com.
