Rapper and rocker Rico Nasty provided her fans with a happy surprise in the form of six new songs uploaded on Monday (September 6, 2021) to her SoundCloud page. The five previously unreleased tracks are titled “Rico’s Archives” and reflect her talent for tapping into an array of sounds and making them her own, whether hip hop, punk or metal. Her return to SoundCloud is a fitting one because the platform paid a big part in her discovery back in 2015.
In the punk-infused opening track, “Switch Places,” Rico (real name Maria Kelly) flexes off signature “scream-rap” chops, and then proceeds to switch things up with “How Ya Feel” and “Cotton Candy,” which convey a more dynamic pop feel. With “Grow Up,” the 24-year-old wrestles with anxious thoughts about growing older. The final single, “Show Me Your Love,” credits Take A Daytrip, longtime collaborators of Lil Nas X, as the producers.
Last week, Rico Nasty appeared in NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert, in which she opened her set with her latest single, “Magic,” released in June. Rico performed a mixed setlist of both new and old songs, performing with her all-female band.
