While this column is all about women’s music, it’s impossible to deny that the past week’s headlines have been dominated by Kanye West and Drake, two of the biggest names in the game. While both album were filled with features, it was a little disappointing to see very few women on either album. Drake had two, Yebba and Tems with a brief Nicki Minaj interlude while West’s project featured Shenseea, Stalone, Syleena Johnson (for “Donda Chant”) plus a Lauryn Hill sample.
Stirring up some dust, gospel singer Bri Babineaux pointed out she hadn’t provide West permission to use a sample making use of her rendition of “Keep my Spirit Alive.” The claim was immediately pushed back on by gospel singer B. Slade, who let it be known he wrote the song, and cleared the sample months ago.
Leaving the inclusion of female creatives to the side, many music lovers viewed Drake’s decision to credit R. Kelly, whose currently on trial for alleged sex crimes, for an interpolation of his 1988 single “Half on a Baby,” and West’s inclusion of Marilyn Manson on “Jail part 2” as hostile statements.
Leaving the male-generated dramatic to the side, August’s Snobette Sounds includes top singles by or featuring SZA, Enchanting, Kali, Jhené Aiko, Monaleo, Sevyn Streeter, BIA, Abby Jasmine, Shenseea, Aaliyah, Nija, Lyrica Anderson, Tamera, Abra, Kash Doll, Coi Leray, Iggy Azelea and Selah.
