HBO has revealed the official trailer for season two of “Euphoria,” a teen drama directed by Sam Levinson and starring Zendaya. The eight-episode series will debut January 9, 2022 at 9:00 PM EST. New episodes will air weekly. In addition to the trailer the synopsis for season two reads: “Amidst the intertwining lives in the town of East Highland, 17-year-old Rue Bennett (Zendaya) must find hope while balancing the pressures of love, loss, and addiction.”
In addition to Zendaya, who won an Emmy for her role as Rue, returning actors include Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Eric Dane, Angus Cloud, Jacob Elordi, Algee Smith, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Barbie Ferreira, Maude Apatow, Javon Walton, Dominic Fike, Storm Reid and Austin Abrams.
In the trailer’s opening scene, Rue dances through her house to Frank Sinatra‘s “Call Me Irresponsible” and is eventually confronted by her sister Gia Bennett (Storm Reid), who asks her whether she’s high. Later in the preview, she is filmed being choked by an unidentified older man, further indicating she may be caught up in the grimy side of addiction. Fans watching the video have also pointed out there’s a scene in which Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney) is spotted in the passenger seat of Nate Jacob’s (Jacob Elordi) car.
Season two also includes the introduction of musician Dominic Fike, who will play the role of a friend of Rue and Jules. According to coverage by Variety, Fike originally auditioned for a different part, but the character was written out of the show. He then auditioned for and won a bigger role, HBO cast him. “I don’t have to do much acting,” Fike told Variety about his “degenerate” character. “He’s exactly like me. It’s shit I would say and shit I would do.”
Speaking to Variety, Fike said working on the show “felt like a long music video”. He also explained that his character is a “homie” of Rue (played by Zendaya) and Jules’ (Hunter Schafer), and added the actors were “the nicest people ever”.
As for the look and feel of the show, Ferreira, who plays the role of Kat Hernandez, recently told Allure to expect some changes. “My character is definitely more toned-down this season. There’s no latex,” she noted. She also added that the the sparkle makeup and decals, which were created by makeup artist Doniella Davy and were a signature of season one, will change. When asked about how the casts’ makeup will change, she simply stated, “Very different. That’s all I can say.”
Commenting that the glitter won’t be gone altogether, Davy told a commenter on her feed, “The glitter is different this season, you may have to look a little harder but it’s there!! 🙌 I too am addicted to the twinkle !!”
Season two was delayed by COVID-19, which caused filming which had begun in March 2020 to be delayed. The series offered up two bridge episodes centered first on Rue (Zendaya) in December 2020, followed by one focused on Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schaffer) in January 2021.
