Episode seven of HBO’s “Insecure” specifically referenced fashion as a subplot in that all of the outfit changes worn by the core four were designed by Black women. As lead by Issa Rae, “Insecure” is known for working with and amplifying the stories and work Black creatives, an ethos costume Shiona Turini was inspired to highlight with the latest episode, which was themed on the enduring nature of female friendship.
Commenting on her approach to the episode, Turini told Vanity Fair, “I thought it could be really interesting to devote one episode that was so focused on this friendship to celebrate Black women and make it a really intentional experience.”
In the episode, Molly Carter (Yvonne Orji), Kelli Prenny (Natasha Rothwell) and Tiffany DuBois (Amanda Seales) have gathered at Issa Dee’s (Issa Rae) for a hang session. While they had originally planned a whole afternoon and evening of activities, in the end they spent the night “chillin'” and more importantly connecting.
For their first set of looks, Issa wears a Fe Noel plaid button down, Lionne tank top, Sorella cycling shorts and Brother Vellies shoes. Meanwhile, her bestie Mollie “casually slays” in a Samaria Leah denim lace-up set and a Kendra Duplantier tank top. Spreading the love to a fellow talented stylist, Turini put Kelli in a dress by Zerina Akers for Macy’s. Rounding things out, Tiffany’s chilled state of mind is reflected in an Adidas Originals and Wales Bonner tracksuit.
Changing into looks for a girls-night-out dinner date that never came to be, Issa flexes in a Lisa Folawiyo dress, Molly makes a stylish statement in an Aislings Camp dress, Tiffany wears a crop top and skirt set by House of Aama and Kelli wears a robe by iconic stylist Misa Hylton for Macy’s with earrings by L’Enchanteur and .
Switching into their sleepover ‘fits, Issa is fitted in a custom set by Bephie’s Beauty Supply paired with a bralette by Savage X Fenty, Molly wears a dreamy Torlowei robe, Kelli is in a Diarrablu robe and pajama pants while Tiffany makes a sweet statement in a Gilda & Pearl slip dress. Making a united statement, all four women wore Brother Vellies shoes.
While the episode was all about the women, there were quick appearances by the two men weighing heavy on Issa’s mind this season and both of them wore items by Black designers, too. Lawrence Walker (Jay Ellis) lends a helping hand to Condola Hayes (Christina Elmore) in a Honey Fucking Dijon “Love Sensation” sweatshirt and Nathan Campbell (Kendrick Sampson) let Issa know he loves her in a black pair of Perry “The Prelude” sneakers.
