Miu Miu‘s preppy punk spring 2022 runway collection was never a slow burner. From the moment the collection was revealed, heads turned and jaws dropped. For all the talk of return to Y2K-era fashion leading up to the show, Miuccia Prada‘s take on the trend put a exclamation point on all of it, officially ushered in the new era while simultaneously slamming the door on all-day-every-day cozy looks.
It matters that designer Muiccia Prada has her own reference points for the preppy gone wild that’s officially taken over spring editorials. A look at her 1999 Prada runway reveals a collection that’s clearly provided the foundation for the Miu Miu mini, knee high socks and all.
More than just a one off Miu Miu-isolate event, low slung mini-skirts and mini-dresses have been popping up on multiple runways, all of which makes perfect sense given Britney Spears, the original preppy-girl-gone-bad, is riding high in the year of her emancipation.
Before we segue into styling tips, it’s important to note the Miu Miu mini skirt is now sold out! However, sellers on various platforms like Etsy and Ebay have already sourced new and used look-a-like versions at far more reasonable prices than the $660 cost of the original.
Footwear is key!
For those attempting to try this look at home, the key to styling the skirt is footwear. Given the barely there nature of the skirt, it makes more sense to provide the look with a firm foundation whether chunky loafers or knee high boots.
For a more femme fatale look, the skirt can also been paired with low-heel, Mary Jane pumps. While knee-high socks or textured tights are an option, calf-high socks pulled up or scrunched at the ankle provide a more of-the-moment feel.
And while the skirt has mainly been styled by celebs and stylists with a menswear-inspired leather belt, Zendaya put a Cali-girl spin on her ‘fit by wearing it belt free.
Layer, layer layer…
As much skin as the Miu Miu mini exposes, it’s an outfit screaming out for layering. On the runway, the skirt was paired with Miu Miu briefs pulled up above the skirts waistline as well as a cropped sweater and button down. In print ads, Miu Miu has paired the skirt with an oversized blazer while OG influencer Chiara Ferragni wore hers under a puffy parka.
Less polish, more punk
The whole point of editorial is to make a bold statement. In the case of Miu Miu’s mini, that has translated to tops cropped so high they expose the entire abdomen. If it’s not already eminently clear, the skirt doesn’t live and die by washboard abs. The same statement can be made with a cropped sweater or shirt top that sits much lower on the waist.
And if an exposed belly simply does not work for you (especially in the dead of winter!), go for a top that meets the waistline or extends slightly past it. The idea is to stay in the spirt of an outfit that’s equal parts preppy and punk so everything should feel a little slouchy and undone.
The celebs who’ve done the best job pulling off the look have taken a relaxed approach while those who struggled look as though the skirt was playing co-star to their incredibly taut abs.
