London-based i-D has paused its print publication and website as it begins the process of
reorganizing under new ownership by Karlie Kloss who last year purchased the 44-year-old platform, saving it from bankruptcy. The purchase of i-D was handled by Bedford Media, which also houses W, a platform Kloss and a group of investors purchased in August 2020.
Vistors to i-d.com are encouraged to sign up for more information. Site content is no longer accessible, however, i-D‘s social media feeds are still being updated.
In a press release, the company stated, “The truth is that there is a lot going on at i-D. And we’re doing it
ourselves. Creating something that can stand the test of time has always been our goal. In many ways, the
world is different to when we first started, and yet the same things are just as important to us now as they
were back then: reflecting the most exciting and creative expressions of youth culture through fashion,
music, photography, art and everything in between.”
Shortly after the company announced the reorganization, editor-in-chief Alastair McKimm, who has been with the publication for 10 years, sent a note to staff announcing he was stepping down. According to Business of Fashion, McKimm described his departure as “the best thing to do for i-D, Karlie and my own sanity. While the changes at i-D have been derided on social media, McKimm cosigned Kloss, adding, “I’m truly grateful that Karlie invested in i-D’s legacy. I’m behind her 100% in what she wants to do and to that end I feel that stepping aside and opening the door for a new team is the way to go.”
McKimm followed up with a post on Instagram on Wednesday (February 14, 2024) where he confirmed the news, announcing it was his final day with the publication. He thanked his and i-D’s founders Terry and Tricia Jones, but did not mention Kloss.
