In a year over-flowing with debates about the presidential candidates, it makes perfect sense that Balenciaga’s zeitgeist-inclined designer Demna Gvasalias would provide commentary on the year. Rather than go for the obvious statement about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, however, the label chose to zero in on Bernie Sanders, whose most ardent fan base were known as the Bernie Bros.
Multiple items were emblazoned with Sanders campaign logo and the final look included an overs-sized Sanders scarf. Props to The Cut, which had the genius idea of checking in with Senator Sanders to get his view on the collection.
On a royal blue puffer vest combined with baggy black trousers, Sanders said, “With all due respect to Mr. Gvasalia, who I’m sure is a terrific person, we’ve been wearing this look in Vermont for years.” And in the most Sanders-ish quote of all, he commented, “Look, I know I use this phrase a lot, but this feels very ‘wealthiest one-tenth of one percent’ to me,” in reference to a severe looking double-breasted, grey wool coat.
