On June 7th, Swedish furniture company Ikea will hold its annual Democratic Design Day, an event at which the company discusses plans for the future, and also announces planned design collaborations.
One of the collaborators is clearly Off White’s Virgil Abloh, who’s shown in silhouette in a video in which his voice is distorted.
“I like reality and I like the future. That’s at the core of who I am. So when I create it’s not about the genre or of the specific place it lives in. It’s just about the idea,” he states.
The partnership matches up with one of the projects Abloh mentioned during his Columbia University talk. “Imagine a super-awesome design furniture company,” he said. “I’m doing a collab with them.”
In March 2016, friend to Abloh, Kanye West, caused a hubbub when he was spotted at Ikea’s headquarters, sparking rumors of a collaboration that never came to fruition.
It’s not known what Abloh will be working on, but Ikea says it will reveal all at June 7th at 3:30 CET, an event it will broadcast live on ikea.today/ddd
