It’s not clear why, but the hypester boys are really hard on Off White. Possibly it’s because they worship Kanye West and there is some weird dynamic whereby they project their irritation with Ye’s less-than-model behavior on to his creative bestie, Virgil Abloh. Hard to say.
On the other hand, women all along have appreciated Off White, and recent events (CFDA nomination, Nike and Ikea collabs) point to a growing appreciation for Abloh’s talents, hypists boys be damned!
That said, Off White’s spring 2018 collection (shown at Pitti Uomo in Florence) is going to start bringing the hater boys around. It’s slick, a little bit mysterious and is also a break from the high-end streetwear look of his prior collections. In other words, Abloh is looking past the hypists and self-hating souls that they are, now that Off White is showing signs he couldn’t care less, he’s suddenly become hyper desirable. It’s twisted but it’s true.
