Virgil Abloh And Ikea Provide Insight On Coming Furniture Collabo

June 7, 2017. Leave a Comment

Ikea has provided a first reveal of its collaboration with Virgil Abloh and of all things, it’s a remake of the company’s now infamous Frakta bag. The sand-colored canvas bag is marked with the word “Sculpture,” a word that has been featured on some of Off White’s latest bag offerings.

More than just a bag, according to Ikea there is a complete furniture collection, which will arrive in 2019. “Ikea wants to explore the first home and how to make it inexpensive and fashionable. And we believe Virgil Abloh and Off-White is the perfect match to do that with,” said Ikea Range and Supply creative leader Henrik Most in press.

Commenting on the partnership, Abloh said, “I believe we’re in a compilation/post Tumblr generation, you take a number of images that aren’t yours and compile them to make an expression about yourself. You might not own those beautiful things or have the budget to buy them, but you put them on your page and it reflects your taste. My premise is to employ the ability to create these things in a place, with Ikea as the engine behind the thought process, so that young adults can live with design and art. Conceptually, it’s the most important design project I’ve taken on, with the highest potential to educate the consumer.”

As for the Frakta bag, no word on whether it will be available to purchase as part of the collabo, but we will update with that information once it comes available.

Some of you guessed it! @virgilabloh @off____white prototyping a fresh take on the FRAKTA bag in IKEA’s very own prototype shop in Älmhult. “We’re in a moment where IKEA is transcending, and people are bringing this “do it yourself” culture” to the blue bag. What I’m most interested in is doing that process in partnership with the brand. It’s allowing me to put my opinion on a classic. It’s unique, and distinctly as much of off-white as it’s IKEA”. The home boasts a hand-sewn makuti thatched roof and salt-water pool with furniture sourced from all over Africa but especially Marrakech and Cairo. Campbell is also a fan of furniture made in Senegal.

Commenting on her Kenyan home, Campbell explained, "It’s a very calming place. You don’t really want to be on the phone. You’re not trying to find a television. You just want to read and be with yourself. It’s nice to just have the silence and the crickets."

Campbell was shot by Khadija Farah and styled by Edward Ngera. The story was written by Lola Ogunnaike.
