Top streetwear site HighSnobiety has released its first documentary, a look at streetwear and fashion in Korea titled “Counterfeit Culture.”
While counterfeiting is a global problem, the trend of copying streetwear has exploded in Korea because of dynamics specific to the country. One of the main issues is simply lack of availability since very few brands distribute to Korean retailers, but the composition of the population and societal mores also have an impact.
The documentary also speaks to Korean designers’ tendency to mimic popular European luxury designers, including Balenciaga, Gucci, Off White and Raf Simons.
The film is highlighted by interviews with NPR reporter Elisa Hu and streetstyle photographer YoungJun Koo, Rare Market boutique owner Mo Kim and Korean designer Bajowoo.
