New York-based label Supreme has launched a Spotify channel, an effort launched with five different playlists. Music has always been a big reference point for the brand, which is well known for its frequent merchandise collaborations with music creatives, bands and labels. Supreme also makes very specific statement about its brand through music in backing tracks for its campaign visuals.
Taking the road less traveled, most of the selected artists have a more underground edge along with a fan base that appreciates reggae, jazz, soul, r&b and hip hop music with a deep cut appeal. Case in point, while the “Don’t Feel No Way” playlist includes music by Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah and DMX, there’s no sign of Drake.
The five playlists are “Don’t Feel No Way,” “If I Ruled the World: Trackmasaters’ Classics,” “Mad Luv,” “To Higher Heights, Esoteric Sounds of Soul Jazz” and “Wicked a Go Feel It: Dub Reggae Roots.”
On that note, the playlists are very (surprise, surprise!) dominated by male artists with contributions from women coming from Mary J Blige, Mýa, Foxy Brown, Gangsta Boo, Allure, Dorothy Ashby, Ranking Ann, Debra Keese, Alice Coltrane, Miss Jones, Ta Teasha Love, Gwen McCrae, Roberta Flack and Minnie Riperton.
