A long hidden love for IKEA‘s Frakta bag has exploded like a blue algal bloom in response to the Swedish company’s humor-filled “The Original” ad, a clap back at Balenciaga‘s pricey version of the humble plastic bag.
The first Frakta-inspired item was a blue plastic baseball cap, made by streetwear labels Chinatown Market and Pleasures. From there it was off to the races with the bag’s plastic material and web straps being used as the foundation for a thong, corset, hoodie, face mask and footwear. As we speak, no doubt the bag is being used to wrap someone’s car.
We have to give props though. While Ikea’s ad was published on April 26, 2017, in our hashtag search on Instagram, we found a pair of Ikea sandals that went live on April 23rd, and even further back, a black hoodie and jogger set whose seams are detailed with Frakta tape dated March 23rd. Bringing things full circle, it looks like the jogger set was inspired by the popular Balenciaga and Champion set.
